  16. painter; of respiratory failure; in Berkeley, California.
  17. Inspired by Cezanne and Matisse, Diebenkorn studied painting at
  18. the University of California and achieved prominence through
  19. works of Abstract Expressionism and figuration. Working mostly
  20. in small studios outside Los Angeles and San Francisco, he
  21. developed a light, airy touch that reflected the sunny
  22. spaciousness of his California surroundings.
